Just forced myself to watch a few videos of the Jharkhand lynching. And was brought to tears. We may choose to distract ourselves in our preoccupations and not engage with the reality of the situation for delusion is always more comforting. But the country is headed for a dangerous place. No different than the way the US was headed during the nascent phases of clans like the Kluklux. There it was hate against African Americans. And here it’s against minority communities. Saddening. From a time where we all lived peacefully before the partition to this slow and gradual end of secularism and diversity. While the powers that rule just watch on. We’re pretty fucked. Some people seem to be reacting to this post only on the communal issue. Whereas for me the government’s lack of any control over any form of vigilantism is the most disturbing aspect of any this. And that this being Hindustan, there seems an agenda at making it very clear that the uppercaste heterosexual Hindu male is the majority and so will have more right and power. From there onwards everyone else is a minority. So from Hindu women, to women in general and the men and women of every other community, to people of all differing sexual beliefs and preferences, technically all fall under this supposed minority community. Safe to say this divisive ideology affects a lot of people. I’ve grown up amidst diversity in Mumbai, diversity of religions, beliefs, social, sexual and cultural. And my art and life has been informed by that diversity. I hope things get better. And yet lament that at this point they’re getting worse. A homosexual might look at the lynching and say ‘what’s this got to do wth me?’ So also a woman. But it does. For it is this kind of non inclusive, regressive, divisive, closed minded, fanning the lowest common multiple kind of thought that makes everyone who isn’t a heterosexual Hindu male a possible victim.
